He's a worthy successor to the huge gap left in British Sci Fi by the passing of the likes of Bob Shaw. Happily, those who know Baxter's more recent works, understand that he has more than made up for this shortcoming in recent times. I would recommend his work (this one especially) to anyone with an interest but would say the science is quite at the forefront of the narrative and so would recommend Ian M Banks or even Alastair Reynolds to someone new to the genre.
