This is a story about a bunch of people - humans, aliens, an AI, etc - who come together as a crew under difficult conditions to create a family. The journey, taking place over the course of a standard galactic year, chronicles the long haul that a ship takes to get to where they need to go to fulfill a governmental work contract that could change everything for the ship and crew. I really like the point you make about Chambers not telling the reader what to think, but rather letting readers decide for themselves. This one has long been on my want-to-read list but I’m confident I’ll want to read the whole series and that makes it a bit more daunting to get started.
