Jake Hunter Detective Story: Ghost of the Dusk is heading in the right direction in terms of improvement but it still has a ways to go. And I can't leave a scene until I've found Talk Profiles and deduction segments work well no matter which control scheme I use, but they feel far too easy to figure out.
I first met Jake Hunter in Aksys Games has brought back the Jake Hunter series to the west in However, as the case unfolds Jake finds himself getting mixed up in other matters. I would have liked to face the consequences of being a bad detective, but Jake is just not capable of that.Additionally, the character illustrations seem to be right out of a classic noir manga.
Use all your skills: search crime scenes, interview suspects and uncover the truth. More visual novel than adventure game, this title doesn’t offer much in terms of challenging gameplay, but that’s not a bad thing. Hell, even the story feels straight out of the '80s even though it takes place in our present day. While they aren't anything groundbreaking, they do offer a nice refresh if you are feeling to bogged down by the main mystery in Ghost of the Dusk. The developer didn’t seem to want to change the design of Jake, his colleagues, and the clients.
Fans of the genre should enjoy it a bit, but a fair few will be left unfulfilled. For every step forward its main story takes, the side cases negate with dull and drawn-out sessions of tap-the-screen, making them feel more like padding that will try the patience of even devoted visual novel fans. Even then, the average four-hour runtime for each of these smaller mysteries actually seems longer due to narratives that feel far more plodding than the first case. The other tasks initiated by the player – traveling to a new location, examining an area, talking with somebody in the vicinity, or occasionally selecting an item from Jake’s inventory to use (most notably his cell phone) – are similarly restrictive.
