In the early 1970s, John Stezaker discovered the photo roman. I had been reading a lot of [French philosopher Maurice] Merleau-Ponty at that point, on vision, and he quotes Jean-Paul Sartre on voyeurism – the way that we live in this voyeuristic culture but we’re actually cut off from what we see, and we’re always trying to find a point of intruding back – of making contact with the real.
